On that basis he certainly has the pedigree to function well in the role, and if come the summer he still has no suitable managerial propositions, FSG should try to tempt him with an offer he can't refuse.

But no one will have envisaged that Edwards' successor would last just a year in the job. Ward's resignation has come as a surprise to many, and while he will stick it out until the end of the season, his decision to depart will raise plenty of questions about what goes on next behind the scenes at the club and in the boardroom.

Though they don't necessarily have to do that. They could opt for a wildcard option that could be the best of both worlds by going for an 'outsider' who knows the club inside-o vip ut: Steven Gerrard.
Yes, you are reading that right. Gerrard should be considered as a candidate for the sporting director role. He may have embarked on a career as a manager, but he never seemed completely comfortable away from Anfield, especially at Aston Villa, when he had to manage in the Premier League.
The sporting director role is often one that gets taken up by former players, even at the biggest clubs in the world. AC Milan appointed Paolo Maldini as their sporting director. They kept him on even when Ralf Rangnick came a hair's breath away from being hired by the club, as Maldini revealed via CalcioMercato, and that has worked well.
Gerrard, with his extensive knowledge of European football, seems like he would be ready for the role. At Aston Villa and Rangers he demonstrated a good eye for talent identification, bringing in players like Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo from relative obscurity and turning them into solid players.
Gerrard also has the kind of pull and name that is very alluring in football. He attracted players like Philippe Coutinho to Aston Villa, who would have otherwise might have been out of the club's range.
Most importantly, it leaves a void to be filled next summer, and means FSG have to be on the hunt for a sporting director once again. This time though, they likely have to go for an outsider rather than someone who has worked at the club for years.
Perhaps working for his beloved club — albeit in a different capacity than the one he may prefer — could still be enough of a swing to lure him back to Liverpool.

When Liverpool appointed Julian Ward as Michael Edwards' successor, it felt like a natural progression for the respective parties. FSG have always preferred to promote from within, and after a decade at Liverpool, Edwards seemed like he was ready to move on and hand over the reins to someone else.

Likewise, Ajax always tend to have former players in their backroom setup. Marc Overmars was previously the club's sporting director, while Edwin van de Saar also works as a chief executive at the club.
